El próximo fin de semana (del 5 al 7 de octubre), la iniciativa «Apadrina una roca» participará en la final del concurso «Ciencia en acción». La final se realizará en el «Cosmocaixa» de Alcobendas (Madrid) en el apartado de «Laboratorios de geología».
Apadrina una roca es una iniciativa pensada para proteger los Lugares de Interés Geológico de la provincia de Segovia buscando que cualquiera que lo desee tome como ahijado un lugar de interés geológico. Muchos pueden ser los motivos que te muevan a tener un ahijado: te trae recuerdos de tu infancia, sueles pasear por él, está cerca de tu lugar de residencia o de descanso… cualquier excusa es válida para ayudar a conocer y poner en valor gran número de Lugares de Interés Geológico de nuestra provincia.
Participar es gratuito, no compromete a nada y es muy fácil. Basta con elegir alguno de los LIGs que aparecen en el catálogo y después rellenar un sencillo formulario de contacto. Una vez confirmada su calidad de padrino y madrina cualquiera de vosotros podrá presumir de ahijado y es que la provincia de Segovia cuenta con un buen número de sitios de interés geológico tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. Puedes echar un vistazo al mapa que contiene todo los LIGs apadrinados hasta la fecha, también hay un pequeño catálogo en el que se irá incorporando información sobre ellos.
Nos gustaría contar con el apoyo de todos vosotros, de esta manera, cuando presentemos el proyecto ante el jurado podremos alardear de una provincia llena de lugares cuyo interés geológico es más que conocido. Pero además, quee los propios vecinos son conscientes de su valor y que quieren ayudar tanto en su conservación como en su puesta en valor. The initiative ‘Rock Sponsoring’, launched in late 2011, is a volunteer program focused on popularizing science and environmental awareness of the population. It is aimed at the protection and conservation of an aspect of our environment traditionally forgotten and marginalized by other natural conservation activities: geological heritage.
A simple contact form on a web page (www.apadrinaunaroca.es) allows to form part of a network of observers over classified geosites, which will surely contribute to more quickly response to any potential threat. Sponsorship is free, subject to a simple regulation of rights and obligations, and will be complemented by other training activities of the godparents: lectures, courses, meetings and scientific and filling legal claims against possible threats. You can sponsor a place of geological interest, or a paleontological or mineralogical site, a unique rock formation, a characteristic relief, etc., whose study and interpretation allow reconstruct the history of the Earth and ways to life that lived in the past.
In just the first month of launched, more than a thousand people have visited the site (2,500 page views), and more than a hundred geosites have been sponsored.The iniciative has begun promoting the sponsorship of geosites in the province of Segovia (Spain), from existing catalogs and inventories of its geological heritage, but the idea is to expand and export this initiative to the rest of the country.
The experience has had such an impact that many media have echoed the initiative, and different groups (Geological Society of Spain, the Spanish Association for the Teaching of Earth Sciences, Association of Professional Geologists…) have shown interest in extending this strategy of awareness-raising all over Spain, and even internationally.
